Santa Maria del Carmine

Today's first stop was at the Santa Maria del Carmine.

We walked from the hotel and enjoyed the window displays in Prada and Gucci. We crossed the Ponte Alla Carraia bridge and got our first view of the Ponte Vecchio.

The Santa Maria del Carmine is famous for the Brancacci Chapel, home to breathtaking Renaissance frescoes by Masaccio and Masolino da Panicale and later finished by Filippino Lippi.

The frescoes of the Brancacci Chapel were commissioned in 1423 and the vivid pinks, blues and purples can only really be appreciated when you step inside the chapel. When our group entered the Chapel, a chorus of 'wow's' could be heard.

The church itself is huge and features ornate cornices, painted ceilings and opulent chandeliers. Camera were clicking all around to try and capture the scene. We then went into the main church to further appreciate the space before doing some sketchbook work in the courtyard and the compulsory gift shop sweep.
